Declaration of Independence

Declaration of Independence. The 4th of July is about America’s independence, not just a another holiday from work, a day at the river or beach or a chance to shoot off fireworks. It is that day and month in 1776 that the Declaration of Independence was adopted. It was the American colonies declaring their independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Some fun facts:

The Declaration of Independence was drafted by Thomas Jefferson between June 11 and June 28, 1776.

However, the actual legal separation of the 13 colonies occurred on July 2, 1776 when the Second Continental Congress voted in closed session in favor of a resolution for independence.

That’s when they turned to Jefferson’s draft that had already been prepared.

Of course, the message of the Declaration wasn’t new. In fact, its same ideals were expressed greatly by notables such as John Locke and other Continental philosophers. What Jefferson did was lay out a list of grievances against the king to justify the separation in the Declaration.

In July 1776, there were estimated to be 2.5 million people living in the nation. There are now an estimated 311.7 million living in the United States as of June 30.

Have a nice 4th of July to all and don’t forgot about our soldiers who will be fighting on foreign soil.
